Arne Bang 1901 – 1983:
Arne Bang studied under the well known sculptor Niels Hansen prior to attending the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen 1920 - 1925 studying under Utzon-Frank, And later again 1928 – 1929 where he graduated. From 1926 – 1928 he had a ceramic workshop together with Carl Halier 1873-1948 in Fensmark and he also contributed to Ipsen Art Pottery during that period. Arne Bang worked together with his brother Jacob E. Bang (1899-1965), a well known architect and glass designer, on the Danish pavilion at the 1925 Paris Decorative Arts Exposition.
He was hired to build up a stoneware production at the Holemegaard Glass Factory in Holme Olstrup, 9 km from Naestved. At first his production were signed HG for Holmegaard and later in the early 1930s he used his own AB monogram. The production culminated in the 1940s with 15 fulltime workers at the workshop, which were active until 1951.
Arne Bang’s ceramic output are entirely original and present a style of its own among Danish Art Pottery with a focus of technical excellence and innovation. He did create a few studio pieces with the AB incised, but most of his works were from the production line with a painted AB and an item number – the lower – the earlier. Bowls, tea pots and vases were the major part – but a few figural items of elephants, bears and other are considered highly collectible by collectors.
